I think one of the towns should be invaded by NPCs.  Like Lizardmen or lavamen coming from a hole in the ground.

What do others think?

I'm all for it. It would be interesting to see how everyone would react.

Expand the tunnels and you'll never find anyone up at ground level because they'll all be roaming the tunnels.
If I could redo the map, I'd make it about half the size.

Serious remark there, what would it take to reduce the map size?
is there a particular format where one of us could produce a user-mod map for a trial ?

I seem to have become embroiled in what Im sure is coincidental arrivals of characters,
it took me 2 days to get back to the fight, and suddenly I'm surrounded
so it looks like there's either enough people or at least enough activity for something like an arena event?
Sure wish I could switch character stats, it's a nightmare going up against 105HP as a scientist.

You should try making allies with some soldiers and be a healer.

Changing the map to half the size would require a lot of fiddling with the map itself - you can't just drop every other row and column because you might lose part of a tunnel that goes straight, an important feature such as the town huts or other things. The GPS co-ordinates for everything would break horribly - would have to make them all odd or all even numbers, update the locations for everything on the wiki and all sorts of other breakages that I haven't thought of.
Oh, and the towns themselves would have to remain the same size otherwise the huts get too close and cause problems - this rules out certain areas from being "compressed" - it would probably need something like Seam Carving (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seam_carving) to be performed on the map and writing that would be more involved than just editing bits out manually

Curious.

Did you use an algorithm to make the map or was it all hand-designed?

Hand designed based on an actual island for the shape, I had (maybe still have?) a script that takes an image with specific colours for tiles and imports a ground-level set of tiles. Things like huts were placed manually.
