Overture was extremely late in its publishing schedule. Gaiman clearly had more interesting, if less commercially lucrative, things to do:

We meet the mother and father of the Endless. These characters had never been foreshadowed before. They seemed to be shoe-horned in.

On the other hand, the hero of the piece, revealed only in the final pages, was a big surprise, and ironically, will never remember being the hero. I thought that was well done.
