I am trying to get my exploration badge for Eyes, im getting there slowly, you have to have explored over 5000 map units, im on 4628.

So this got me thinking.  What is a map unit?  Is it singular square, a GPS co-ordinate?  Is it one blank square on the map?  Which to my knowledge is 4 x 4 singular in game squares GPS co-ordinates.  Also, to discover one map unit, to push me up to 4629, would I need to stand on each square or simply discover the blank square on the map?

Apart from the main island map I am guessing the Sacred Space is the only other map to knowledge?  So exploring all the tunnels wont help you at all?

The highest total of 5164 areas discovered has been achieved by 23 people, is the max?  New areas are created often, I wondered if that would change this.

Yeah I could probably figure this all out but the way I see it, not a lot is going on in the forum and, well, its good to talk....or communicate.

I would guess in answer to my own questions, in question mark order:

A singular blank square on the map.
A singular square.
Just discover the square on the map.  As the `Top Explorers` statistic page states:

This is the top 20 explorers ever, based on the number of areas that players can 'remember' visiting.

Just the main island map and the sacred space.
The tunnels will not help.
Currently 5164 is the max areas to be discovered.

I've often wondered this myself, if the tunnels counted or not.

I'm currently working on my exploration badge as well. I've had a little over 100% explored for a few years, and just decided a couple months ago to go for the rest. It seems you need at least 138% or so to get the badge with a max of 142.3%. I don't know if the tunnels count or not, but I completely mapped them years ago, so for me it's a moot point. The real PITA is that to get the badge you have to explore ALL the water squares! Which is slow going since it takes 2 AP for each step.
I thought the map units were 5x5.

Try exploring the deep water with fungi poisoning...not great.

5x5 you may be right there.

I was actually mapping the tunnels when you pulled your little stunt. That's one badge I missed out on.

A map "square" is a 5x5 area of the map but they have a boundary such that you can move between 4 tiles and cover 4 different squares. There was some discussion a few years ago about it including the most optimal way to explore. Can't remember if the tunnels count.

Yes, when I'm just trying to fill in the map, I move in a zig-zag fashion. If I were heading north for example, I'd step NW into column A, then NE into column B, so as to discover two strips of squares while spending the same AP as you would traveling a straight path north in only one column,

Some of my characters have mapped the island and got the badge, never explored the cavez, and their statistics say 5164 areas explored and that that's 142.3% of island, and that is the statistic displayed for the top explorers, so I think that indicates the tunnels are not considered. Also one of my characters with the whole map has been into way more tunnels than the others and his exploration statistic is not different from the others, still 5164 (142.3% of island) areas explored.

(Still I have the doubt of that one square on the map that can't be mapped).

Just got my Exploration badge today!

Areas explored: 5002 (137.9% of island)

I'm guessing from the numbers that you have to hit 5000 map squares.
