Was it just coincidence that the treasure map I bought on April 1st lead to a shallow hole containing only a blunt dagger and 1 exp? If not, that was Cold...

Just a coincidence, what was the description though?

Did you get the message about the map crumbling to dust? If not, you didn't get the treasure yet.

Did you fill the hole back in and re-dig it?

Small stash of weapons as per usual. Got to it in record time. It said quite clearly I found the treasure and the map vanished, you digbag, and nothing underneath it. It matters not to me anymore because it was hilarious.

Did you by any chance... drop something in the hole while you were digging? I just tried that:

You appear to be at the location marked. Time to start digging for treasure!
You dig a hole with your shovel.
You drop a skull into the hole.
You dig a hole with your shovel.
As you try to dig deeper without disturbing the item already in the bottom of the hole, all you succeed in doing is burying it.
You dig a hole with your shovel.
You find 1 skull in the hole. You gain 1 XP.
Congratulations! You found the treasure mentioned in map 529. You crumple the map up and discard it.

I'm wondering if burying the skull cause it to replace the item that was supposed to be there, perhaps. Any chance you did that with a blunt dagger? Or it was already there, because other reasons?

For sure didn't drop anything in whilst digging. And I ain't never carry around a blunt dagger like some toothless pirate. Your experiment is definitely curious.

Assuming the hole depth is 0 (no hole) when you started...

You dig a hole with your shovel.
(hole depth now 1, no content at that level)

You drop a skull into the hole.
(hole depth still 1, content at level 1 = skull)

You dig a hole with your shovel.
As you try to dig deeper without disturbing the item already in the bottom of the hole, all you succeed in doing is burying it.
(both messages from the same action, hole depth now 0 as the second message is equivalent to filling in the hole once, content at level 1 = skull)

You dig a hole with your shovel.
You find 1 skull in the hole. You gain 1 XP.
(both messages from same action, hole depth now 1, but content empty as you found the skull)

At this point, if you were to dig again, hole depth would be 2 and there could be other stuff here.

I don't think the contents of the hole would be disturbed by anything else being buried there, even by someone else after you activated the map. I'm fairly certain I thought of that condition.

Odd. Dunno. But I seem to remember trying to dig deeper and finding nothing. I did automatically discard the map after finding the skull- that's not an event trigger, is it?

I had actually assumed I got scammed by the trader and he sold me a phony map

Regarding have to dig very deep to get a treasure. This is almost always the case. However I have found it in a shallow hole a couple of times.

The treasure I just found was like this.
One of my characters, after waiting for a forest fire to die, upon ground that had no existing hole struck the treasure immediately (ie in a shallow hole)

You dig a hole with your shovel.
You find 4 healing herbs, 1 machete and 1 cutlass in the hole. You gain 1 XP.
Congratulations! You found the treasure mentioned in map 1384. You crumple the map up and discard it.

The map did disappear. I then dug deeper and found nothing else.

I think that is the same thing I ran into before. At least you got something somewhat decent. Do you remember what the map identified as?

The skull belonged to the last guy who accused that trader of selling counterfeit maps.

I think the map was a rum runners or healing supplies?
I dunno for sure though.
Simon could check the logs though.
I don't think what I got matches any of the actual treasure rewards. I might have just dug up someones stash.
Bug might be related to the fire though. Maybe it messes with something.

The hole is too deep. If you were to dig any deeper, you wouldn't be able to get out!

I only bury skulls four levels down, so it wasn't me this time. Happy new year, champ.
