I was thinking more of the map leads you to a landmark and then has as the last step 12 paces south 3 paces west.

But I suppose that would need a lot of landmarks.

Having some maps behave differently might be interesting.

You find 5 Easter eggs in the hole. You gain 101 XP.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Started a page about treasure maps on the wiki

Still need to link it to items, and fill out other things, but overall, what else does it need?  Which character should I do a small write up in it?

Different maps have different descriptions when you examine them. The two that I've had have mentioned healing items or there being an 'eggscellent' reward or something. I assume this gives some kind of hint about what you will find at the end.

Edit: Another one mentioned a 'charming treasure.' Here is the quote in full.

Quote
The writing on map 47 says that it's the map to a charming treasure. The outline of the map looks like the east section of the island, but in order to see where exactly the treasure is buried you must activate the map by warming it gently. Once active, the markings will only be visible for a time before they fade and the paper disintegrates.

Does the map number just keep counting up with each new map? Is this number decided when the map is created or when you identify it? Will significant numbers like map 100 or 1000 contain super-special-secret items?

I also assume that the map is only useable for a certain amount of time after it is activated, either a fixed period of time or randomised to some degree. I have certainly had one active for at least 24 hours.

The description of the map (when identified after activation) will give you some clue as to how long you have left before it disappears.
The map number is just an incrementing number so you can identify them if you have more than one in your inventory at a time. It's assigned on first identification or use. There's nothing special about 100 or 1000.

The mechanics behind the maps are such that I can do special ones for contests and after some discussion with Lori yesterday, I think I can make multiple maps that point to the same treasure and first one to find it gets everything and everyone else finds nothing. Once I've coded this, look out for a contest

You dig a hole with your shovel.
You find 2 machetes and 1 heavy sword in the hole. You gain 61 XP.
Congratulations! You found the treasure mentioned in map 54. You crumple the map up and discard it.

Nice!  Grin

Wow, some of these treasures are surprisingly valuable. Has anyone figured out yet how long a map will last for after it has been activated?

I had one active for 3 or 4 days, so at least that long.

I just picked up a few treasure maps and thought I would share the description of each.

Quote
The writing on map 78 says that it's the map to a rum runner's cache.
The writing on map 79 says that it's the map to a small stash of weapons.
The writing on map 80 says that it's the map to a juicy treasure.
The writing on map 81 says that it's the map to a charming treasure.
The writing on map 82 says that it's the map to a vast sum of gold.

I will report back with what each one contains in turn.

Yeah, we have some of these up on the wiki.  The rum Runner's cache is a new one though.  I'll put that in.

For the weapon one I've gotten a cache of rifles and bullets as well.  I wonder if this is an avenue to find pistols...

The egg-citing prize is 5 Easter Eggs and I think I got somewhere between 12 and 15 bottles of rum from the rum runners one.

I probably should have checked which were already there and only posted the ones which weren't.

I'll test out how long a map stays active for as I don't really have any use for more charms.

Is it always five easter eggs?

I haven't seen the Trader in Rakmogak have a treasure map available for sale yet.

There are restock runs 3 times a day.
Not every run actually restocks every trader (somewhat random).
Not every run restocks every item that the trader tries to keep in stock.

I've just updated all of them to make sure they have at least 1 map.
