Title: Spring Cleaning 2014 Sign Up Thread
Post by: Neil Tathers on March 06, 2014, 05:05:32 PM
This contest, as describe in 'Nother Contest thread, is a contest where people sign up one of their characters.  Once the sign up is over, they will receive a character's name via email.  When they kill said character, they will get that's character's target and so on.  The rules will get more defined as the contest date gets closer.

First off, we need contestants!  I'm setting the contestant number to ten!  To be fair, I will not be submitting any of my contestants into the contest.  If people wish to remain anonymous of who some of their alts are, they can feel free to submit it via PM to me, and I'll post the character as signing up.

I will List contestants here as they sign up.

As for prizes, I'll think of a custom weapon for the winner, and of a badge idea for all particpants, as well as the winner, who will get a different badge.  If anyone wishes to create badges for this, feel free.

I may also hand out other prizes as well, like I tend to do during these contests.

Signing up period is until 18MAR2014 at midnight on the next day, signup is over.  Contest will begin on 22MAR2014.

*SIGN UP PERIOD HAS ENDED ON 18MAR2014 SO DEVELOPER CAN FIGURE OUT THE ORDER AND A WAY TO AUTOMATICALLY TELL PERSON OF THEIR TARGET*

The Rules (Which will expand as we get closer to the date of the beginning of the contest, on 22MAR2014).
1) Only one character per player.
2) You need to make a kill with a weapon.  Spirit kills are not allowed to gain points.
3) The last man standing needs a total of 5 points to win the contest.  You gain a point when you make your assigned kill.  If the last man standing doesn't have 5 points, the winner will be the next in line due to assassination to have the required amount of points.  A kill can only be made by a weapon (sword, machete, dagger, knife, rifle, etc.), kills cannot be be made by a spirit.
4) A player is eliminated only when there assigned killers assassinates them.  Otherwise, a player can be killed by other contestants, animals, spirits without being eliminated from the contest.
5) Certain non contestant characters will be offered as bounties during the contest.  When the bounty becomes available, the first contestant to kill the character will gain bonus points.  The bounty will have a link to the character, as well as a general location of the character.
6) When their is four players left, the contest will become a free for all, all targets become available for points for everyone.

Thanks people.  I'll see if Simon can make this an annoucement in game to promote the contest.  I'll send annoucements through my clans as well.

We are going to start solidifying the rules this week, since the game will officially start next week.

First off, I'm thinking we impose a time limit, of say a month.  This will make sure everyone goes forth with the game and don't go hiding in the cave system.

Also, I want to make sure people fully understand, just so there is no questions in the middle of the game.  Say we have this circle of people

Raffles
Anthor
Gorry Louis

Raffles gets a point if he kills Anthor, Anthor a point if he kills Gorry, and Gorry a point if he kills Raffles.  Now, if Raffles kills Gorry, he doesn't get a point, but he's free to kill the other contestant if he runs across him, to slow that person down if he wishes.  If Anthor kills Raffles, the same thing, no point, just hinders the player.  Now, if Raffles kills Anthor, then kills Gorry, he gets two points.  Make sense?

Yes.

One thing, to make it clear: if I kill my target, they're out of the game permanently forevur, right?
But if I kill another contestant yet they aren't my target, they can keep playing, right?
Also random deaths to non-participating players or animals don't take a player out either, right?

Correct

The eliminated layer will keep their points but cannot acquire anymore

I'm not picking a bone with you in particular, Ted, so excuse me if I'm being brash...

But can't you read the posts? In the OP it says open until 21 March. Today, it's 10 March. So, no, you're not late. It just ticks me off when not even grown ups read the darned instructions.

Muad, to be fair, a lot of people have quite a bit going on in their lives, and the OP is about 6 paragraphs. Just a bit longer than immediate cursory digestion.

At the very least, Tad didn't say anything smug like "Ya I know, I just wanted to get things done quick. FYI, I have bigger priorities in my life than a game, and so should you fagg0t."

Because if anyone did something like that, I'd turn a blind eye if they got sht for it.

Nurse Ass Ass (-in) (deeply sorry) would be the more pleasant addition, but Payout Memo seems like a stronger contender to unleash the bloodthirst. I'd go with the cannibal since 109 maximum HP can go long way.

Really, just go with any character with heavy sword/bonus AP/can survive ambush.

I come powered by the souls of a thousand elephants! Drugs can't compare.

Getting the feeling chasing a specific person over the whole island might take a while. Especially if your target ends up sprinting to the other end of the world to chase their own target, and you end up spending a week following a trail gone cold. There's a lot of ground to cover out there.

When you say "supplying"...?

When I say "supplying"....No I won't follow through on that build-up. I'll be giving fungi juice to all contestants on a non-partisan need-basis. On the other hand, if you've got heavy swords / pistols - or I think you do - then I won't be giving you any. So yes, fair warning for those who are already well supplied, you should probably kill my alt before I hand over my stuff to your competitors.

EDIT: And the Hierophant will be killing all those who come close to York regardless of affiliation. We don't tolerate that kinda crap in York.

I'll update the first post of this information.  Also, should probably add something about idling...

Maybe I should put together a script that shows the approximate locations of each of the competitors still in the game. Narrow it down to an area of the map, perhaps 1 of about 12 sectors?

That would be helpful. Alternatively, confine it to an area -for example, north of the mountain, between the wreck and the swamp. Or the York Peninsula. Still a big area but not unrealistic.

Next target information has been tested.

http://www.shartak.com/target.cgi will tell you who your next target is (once I've setup the appropriate data flags on the 22nd). It will also display a message in your history when you get killed by your assassin, or when you kill your target.

* You are now out of the Spring Cleaning 2014 contest.
or
* Your next Spring Cleaning 2014 target is Simon.

It will link to the target's profile so you can add to contacts.

As I said, this will only function once I've added the flags on the 22nd but I'm assuming that Neil will be letting people know their first target. If not, the contest begins once I've added the flag.

Maybe for the map idea, it could use the "a long way to the north" type directions, but only until you get to a certain distance. Too close and it won't tell you anything. If so, what kind of distance seems reasonable? I was thinking 50 blocks perhaps.

I planned on annoucing targets as late as I could Friday night, then I remembered if we go by server time, that is around 7 for me.

So if I'm not doing something away from home, I should be able to hand out targets at the start of the contest.  I hope.

Great work Simon

Okay peeps, targets will go out tonight.  After that it should be automated.

We are also putting in a general area of target for those that get discouraged easily.

Remember, every kill is one point, and to win the contest, you need to be last man standing and have five points.  If you are last man standing, and don't have five points, then I need to figure out who got the most points during the contest and took the longest to get killed.

During the contest, my characters (Neil, Grunk, Aphetto) will be offered up as bonus points during a specific times of the event.  I will annouce those times in this thread.

Badges go to participates, a special badge/prize to the winner.

Your current target is Simon who is east from where you stand.

Target direction done, but only if you're more than 50 blocks away. This leaves a reasonable area to search but doesn't make it quite so difficult to find someone given enough time.

Works perfectly well. Muwahaha. The nature of the targeting system means as the player numbers thin, people will end up in the same locale, which will help bring it to a conclusion.

Nope

Me and Simon have already discussed what happens when someone idles.  I'll have more information when it's available.

Ah, I enjoyed that very much. My targeting device seems to have gotten stuck on Anthor though. Does it take time to reset?

It should have been instant. Very strange. It worked ok for Tad's kill and during testing. I've manually reset your target to the next person in the loop.

And if you leave the 50 block area, does the target guide reactivate?

Because I've moved away from my target in order to get a new reading, and I'm not getting any love.

Tad has made another kill!

Simon and I have come up with a solution to the idle problem.  If a chartacter idles, Simon will unidle him so he can still be killed by his competitor.

Also, we have breaking news!  It seems that a group known as the Concerned Citizens of Shartak have released a bounty on Grunk the Pale, last seen slumming it at Crab Claw swamp\Tarak's Spit\the Swamp above Derby, South of skull island, west of Wiksik!

He is worth two bonus points to the assassin who kills him!

I'll neither confirm or deny that. But dead men can't get points, so can't stay down long.

Starts to feel like either my target is chasing me back, or I'm stuck in a manhunt triangle. Whenever I wake up, my target is too close to get a direction on. More swimming is clearly not going to solve anything fast, so I'm switching strategy. Come get me!

SEVEN SOULS REMAIN. WHO WILL BE THE LAST HEAD STANDING?

woodrow guthrie - Whose songs saved the world from economic hardship, but won't save the hearts of his victims.

Switchblade Heart - Who is someone I can't identify, but thanks to the Streisand Effect, I can probably find on google. Sht was so cache.

Muad Dib - Who, like the base of a pillar, will crush his enemies, like the base of a pillar!

Raffles - Rektam's Champion, currently rekking faces.*

Mouse - The Devil from the Depths, beware their mighty squeak!

Zarquay - A ghost who came back from the dead to get things done the corporeal way.

Tad Allagash - Have my babies Tad Allagash! :-*

(* and also things not quite facees)

Also, hey guys.

Current Standings!

Mouse, in first place currently with six points.  If he outlives the other two, HE WINS!
Raffles in second with three points, If he manages to kill the other two, HE WINS!
Muad Dib has zero points.  If he manages to kill the other two, and get the newest bonus points before he kills the other two, HE WINS!

Neil Tathers (http://www.shartak.com/profile.cgi?id=3936) is now being offered up as three bonus points!  Last seen fighting a wildfire northeast of Wiksik, Neil is wanted by the Concerned Citizens of Shartak for slaughtering small species of animals and claiming that he's the best hunter ever for it!  And plus, that pec oil has contaminated plenty of water.

I'm not too sure what Killian is referring too.  One needs five points to win.  Raffles only has four, if Maud kills him, then Raffles is stuck with Four, Maud can't win, so the winner becomes Mouse.

If Raffles kills Maud, he gets the point, and victory.

But if Raffles kills Neil, then Raffles gets the bonus points, doesn't matter is Maud kills him or not, and Raffles will win.

It's utterly confusing, isn't it?

It became apparent that upon not finding Muad'Dib and brutally slaying him (he was somewhere near the lakes north of York but damned if I know where) that I needed to play catch up with one of the Marked Men. Raffles got to Grunk first. After that, there was no winning on the Tathers-Pale-Kabal Points System.

I'm appointing myself speech giver. This is a natural consequence of my previous actions.

If I remember correctly, Dave/Adm. Benz/Q. Hummingbird proved himself the most self-aware Shartaker by establishing a contest in which other players could hunt him down. Considering how many people wriggle their hands about his playing of an island-wide board game, it was the most creative answer to the complaints. Very memorable politicking, it's good enough to borrow for a movie script.

Neil Tathers's/Hawthorne/Sparrowhawk (yes I read it, Neil, and I'm sorry if I offended you by not responding with seriousness) contest has thematic inversions. Where Dave had others coordinate in (rather, against) his name, Neil had people kill each other for his competition, which is what Dave is normally accused to do. And while he did offer his alts as bonus points, his main character mystically happened to survive.

I find it intriguing that, Neil Tathers the native, performed in the finale what more or less was a firewalk. Or he at least circumvented a fire; narrative accounts tend to be exaggerated. Ritual firewalks are practiced generally for initiations and community solidarity. I think despite the chaos normally associated with assassination, community cohesion is precisely what Neil achieved. There were even butchers who did pretty damn well, who rarely appear on the forum.

Congratulations to everyone who participated, and Raffles, who played the game of aggression and reactivity most effectively.

There's a darker side to my understanding of fire as a motif of the contest. The Zoroastrian equivalent to the Apocalypse, the Frashokereti, has all souls pass through a great flame. The good pass through unharmed, while evil souls and their malignant overlord are purged by it. Even though everyday life, including occurrences on a quaint forum, are hardly on such a scale, I'd think that some vestiges of purification apply to these ends.

Fire is also symbolically cleansing (as is its antithesis, water), manifesting most apparently in the Phoenix rebirth metaphor/archetype. Quite a different thing from the fiery sensations of gonnorhea, which is not a cleansing action of regeneration.

And deftly avoiding the obvious sexually transmitted diseases segue, congratulations to Raffles, and thanks to Neil (and Simon) for the organisation of said contest.

As it was, the only char who asked for some was some dude I'd sworn to kill on another character, so it was technically alt-abuse, but he was theoretically a zerger, so I felt no shame...until now. Drat!

Lol, don't worry. While these are fun events, these contests are usually something of a circle jerk, no offense to anyone. Just like the animal badges that serve little purpose other than to keep a leash on single minded players, who enjoy establishing dominance over virtual fauna. Sometimes I think rewards and goals in the game lack substance, but it works well enough for its scale. For that matter, when I wonned-ed the one contest in the past, I was honored to have the win, but always knew inside that the distinction was hollow, since combat in this game is like fighting an army of pillows. I love Shartak, but for serious strategy, I go with real time games.

In case this sounds like a lack of gratitude, I thank Neil, Dave, and Simon & devs for tending to Shartak for as long as they have.

Easy fellahs. If there's going to be one upping, be sure to put it in the form of a contest so everyone can enjoy.

Congratulations Raffles.  That was fun, except for the part where I died.  Cheers chaps.

Very true. I was going to do a Killy appreciation thread over the weekend, but I got tired of looking through your relevant posts and quit. Also it was on the long-ish side, like 4 paragraphs before I gave up.

Raffles should now have the Assassin's Dagger. A vicious blade that poisons when it strikes (just like poison darts). It required some slight modifications to existing objects and the combat system so if anyone spots anything up with blowpipes (or the Assassin's Dagger) please shout!

Excellent, I'm glad you could code that in.  Thanks!

Enjoy your prize Raffles!

Awesome work all around, I think this event and its symbols are a summary of the island's politics.

You bet.

I wonder if Simon could be persuaded to revive all idled characters, so as to give us many more targets?

Out of all the contests I ran, I think this was my most favorite one.
