So I was reading the "Tell about yourself" thread and noticed everyone referencing the political compass.  I tracked it down, tried it, and I remembered doing it before.  And I don't like it.  Why?  The questions are phrased badly.  They don't produce an accurate answer, at least for me.  The test told me I was slightly left leaning and had an authoritarian score of something like 3.85.  This is completely incorrect.  Why?  Because I'm a conservative with slight libertarian leanings.  However, the way the questions were phrased, my answers, while true, apparently mislead the test.

I think it's because the test asked how I thought things should be.  I'm a realist.  I don't typically deal in terms of how things should be.  I think the world should be a happy place without war, crime, poverty, injustice, or immorality.  However, I don't believe for a second that humanity will ever be free of one of these problems, let alone all of them.  Therefore, I favor policies that I think will actually succeed in bettering society.  To rephrase Simon Bolivar, I don't believe in doing what's best, I believe in doing what works.

The political compass is flawed because it asks your ideals, not what policies you actually support.  Therefore, it doesn't give an accurate picture of what some people think.  If someone is willing to be flexible and accept that maybe their ideals simply won't work, the compass doesn't account for this.

ummm....maybe you're messed-up politically, not the compass.

I mean, being a conservative with liberal leanings is like being a vegetarian with a leaning towards meat.

Libertarian /= liberal.  I have libertarian leanings.  The COMPASS says I have liberal leanings.  Wink

I believe that libertarian and liberal politics are distinct. Libertarians tend to be more capitalist and less interested in baning things or raising taxes.

Yeah. I did that a while back, and I got nearly the same score. 3-point-something up, and just a smidgen to the left. But yeah, that's a pretty accurate description, there.

Maybe you do?  Sometimes we can't see the obvious truth about ourselves, since we've convinced ourselves of the opposite.
