Pirates MMORPG To Launch

Walt Disney Internet Group will launch Pirates of the Caribbean Online, a new massively multiplayer online game based on the hit film franchise, this summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The subscription-based game is in beta testing, and no launch date has been set, the trade paper reported.

Pirates is designed as a game but even more as a virtual world in which players build their own stylized characters, form pirate communities and embark on ship- and land-based treasure hunts.
...
Characters in the movie franchise will exist in the Pirates Online world, with the addition of a new villain, Jolly Roger.
...
Participants will be able to play the game a third of the way through without subscribing, though they will see ads. For unlimited access, players pay a monthly fee of $9.95.

To date, nearly 100,000 people have registered on the game's Web site, requesting information about the game as well as a chance to participate in its current beta status.

I don't have full language skills so I'm unable to understand this lawyer speak.

The one player game was supposedly terrible so I see no reason why this should be any good. But the basic idea sounds cool.

*sigh* The truth is is that you guys are looking at it from the eyes of customers who don't want to pay for their toys. Gaming wasn't "free" back in the days of tabletop. There are licensing issues, programmers, the administrative circle, repair of servers and troubleshooting. There's a lot of cash going into keeping an MMORPG open, and your complaining about ten bucks a month?

How much is WoW sucking from your pockets? $30 gets you a 60 day prepaid card right. I don't want to hear any of you bitching over a ten buck fee, which I KNOW only barely covers server costs. This is what irks me alot lately, because the on-line artists ( To which I'm a small part of) is have the same problem. People wanting their goods without wanting to pay for it.

I also don't want to here that Blizzard is a bigger name then Disney and worth the fee.

In truth your probably going to get a damn good pirate game for minimal fee. HELL, They're giving you a third of the game for nothing! You can play without cost untill you hit a point, and then can pay. How can you complain about that?

My only concern is Jack Sparrow110, J4ck_Sp4rr0w1010, Jack_Sarrow012...

P.S.- What do you mean "Old Disney"? I can't remember a movie, or toy from them I didn't pay for..

Anyone remember the old Mickey Mouse cartoons?
Or Fantasia?

I miss those things.

Edit: food isn't ready, so I'll discuss my point now.

*sigh* The truth is is that you guys are looking at it from the eyes of customers who don't want to pay for their toys.

I don't have a problem with paying for games, just imagine how much it costed to get all the Sims games.

I wouldn't mind spending 60 bucks to cover the initial programming costs, but 120 a year is just too much, IMHO.

To me it seems that WoW is pretty expensive, too.

HELL, They're giving you a third of the game for nothing! You can play without cost untill you hit a point, and then can pay. How can you complain about that?

Well, why can't they let players play the whole game with ads, then?

I understand what you're trying to say, though.

Guild Wars is trying another tactic.  Pay for the initial game, and then it's free to play.  If you want added material, buy the expansion pack.  From what I've heard, it's been reasonably successful.

Runescape is also trying a tactic somewhat similar, from what I hear.  Register for free, play a while, but to get past a certain point, you have to pay a subscription.  Of course, you can always just start up a new character, but most people get attached to them after a while.

Personally, I have no problem with a Pirates MMORPG.  It's a neglected genre with a lot of potential.  If Disney can pull it off and create a GOOD Pirates MMORPG, I might even maybe think about possibly considering playing.  The problem is movie tie-ins are generally bad, and there have been some Pirates of the Carribean games that were reportedly real stinkers. And the gaming world doesn't need more stinkers.

I'm fluent! Bet you anything they keep far away from what you've done here, though, as part of their clearance procedures.

Runescape is free but no offense to those who play it: it looks free. Its nothing on the same scale as guild wars. Although Guildwars isn't too user friendly and the learning curve is far too steep but it's free.

There are quite a few free MMorpgs out there.

Check out these two sites:http://www.gameogre.com/freemmorpgs.htm and http://www.onrpg.com/

I hope that helps!

Now onto Disney's Pirates online:

Idea is fantastic and could be implemented very well. Only thing that turns me off is the Disney animations; it's all very cartoony. Which is ok but not quite what I'm looking for (Sure Sid Meier's was awesome but that's different). Although Disney has promised that it will place limits on copy names (like Armadox mentioned) like Lord of the Rings Online did.

I agree with Armadox. The fees; even for WOW aren't very steep. In the UK it's £8 a month (around $16) and if you think how much you spend on a night on the piss then that is nothing. It doesn't take alot to find ways to save £8 a month for something that gives you alot of joy (if you are into that).

The one good thing I would say is the creation of new MMorpgs means that you can start with everyone else and there won't be too many High lvls around till at least a week in. I am currently looking for a MMORPG to play and can't really decide.
