What's all this then?  The wiki has nothing to say about it.  Did I miss something?  Am I going insane?  More insane?

You missed something. 

If and when you search in a custom hut (A hut created and paid for by a user) you will find a custom item.  In this case if you search in the Misfit bar you will find a Pocket Watch.  Other items include a Pink and Purple Scarf, a Pith Helmet, a Skull Staff, a Plan Wooden Cup and so on.  None hold any properties or can be used for anything other than trade and flavour.

You can click the 'identify' button on some of those items. The pocket watch will say:

I don't remember what some of the others say.
