they've both got their good points;
cats are generally fairly low maintenance and self sufficient; as long as their food and sanitation is covered, all they really require of you is a warm lap to sleep on. utility wise, they are good for controlling small vermin, and will usually go out of their way not to make a mess or knock things over. on the other hand, they are really only half domesticated so it is extremely difficult (though not entirely impossible) to train them to do/not do anything against their own natural inclination. cats know friendship, but not loyalty.
dogs on the other hand, being result of tens of thousands of years of genetic engineering are fanatically loyal, and with the proper conditioning regimen can be trained to almost any behavior pattern you require. they also come in a wider variety of shapes/sizes, offering many options regarding physical/mental capability and resource efficiency. on the flip side, they are far higher maintenance than cats, requiring greater amounts of food, regular exercise and high level personal interaction. on top of this, they are generally not concerned with cleanliness, and give no thought to damaging things as they go about their business.
on a personal note, i like both species alot, i find dogs to be more reliable and fun to play with, but cats are somewhat more relaxing to be around. in human terms, i suppose a dog are the kind of friend who you go out and do stuff with and will help you move, whereas a cat is that friend who is good to just hang out with on the couch and watch movies.
interesting side note, if you die in your house and your dog is trapped in there with you, it will starve to death right next to your body. your cat will not.

 Sorry guys I just canNOT get enough of img tags. But dogs are superior. Will a cat sniff out bombs for you? No. It will just scratch up your couch and make your eyes itch. Advantage: dog! Also dogs don't crawl around on counters while you try to prepare food. Once I was sleeping in someone else's house who had cats. The cat wanted badly to come into the room where I was sleeping (I'm allergic, thus it was in my interest to keep it out). All night, it kept cannonballing down the hallway and slamming into the door. When it got tired of that, it would mew plaintively and scratch at the door, or stick its paw through the crack at the bottom and claw at the carpet. GREAT JOB I actually think cats are okay, but dogs are clearly the superior lifeform.

Cats, definitely. My cat has learned how to drag and drop files into the trash can on my computer, using the mouse! He also knows how to land 22.5lbs, all 4 paws precisely where it'll hurt most when I'm sleeping, to wake me up to play... Ok, maybe that's a negative! * Anthor wishes he was a cat so he could sleep all day

Dogs will save your life! Dogs fight crime! Cats will hurt your professional life while punching your groin! Advantage: DOG!

I love dogs, but i also hate them because they will be loyal to death to an owner that treats them like dirt. Cat's at least live their own lifes, and you have to win over to gain affection from them! I almost voted both, but dog's make me feel too bad!

I like and have both. Cats - They are like snobby royalty. They ignore you most of the time, but they complain when food and water isn't available. They will mind you when they feel like getting rubbed, but will leave you for a windowsill when they've had enough. They do however enjoy being close to you at times. Can be traitorous sometimes. Dogs - Everyone says they're loyal, and its true. They are like the poor peasants who adore the noble who gives them what they need when they need it. No matter what. They also smell bad faster than cats. Now, we shall post photos of YOUR OWN furry friend.

I be a dog person, yarrr. </pirate>
Mainly because most dogs I've met are adorably insane. Most cats I meet attack me. *shrugs*
However I don't own a dog, so no pics. One day though...

Cats. They don't require as much attention as dogs do, plus in my experience they don't drool everywhere like dogs do.

I don't believe in cops, bosses, or politicians. Some call that anarchism, I call it having a :palm:ing heart that beats! I do believe in freedom and never giving up. Call my methods madness or call them luck. I do what I got to, to feel able to breathe! And if you quit your job well, you can do a little breathing with me.

I like cats, but unfortunately am allergic to them. My aunt has a Yorkshire terrier, a brown/white toy fox terrier, and a black pomeranian. All small, friendly, playful dogs; I used to play with them all of the time.
