Inspired by Simon's Shartak, UD, and Shintolin... I've been inspired to start my own project to develop a game in the same vein, but set in space. Website (minimal), wiki and forum are setup. The game is in the preliminary development stages, I had the idea about 3 weeks ago... so no coding is done at this point. But if anyone's interested... here's the address: http://lightrising.com/I'll be posting updates on the wiki and forum regularly over the coming weeks. Please feel free to post suggestions, discussions etc. on both the wiki and forum. Thanks, Ant

Okay, after a hell of a week trying to get Ruby on Rails working in Windows (and Linux and Windows and Linux and Windows again)... I finally got the whole caboodle installed and it's working! A lot of frustration related to not being able to do any coding because I couldn't get the damn thing working properly.
So now, I have Ruby, Gems, Rails, MySQL, TortoiseSVN and EasyEclipse for Ruby and Rails installed... working... and I was able to do my first piece of code (just "Hello World!") and it ran successfully!
I'm looking forward to really starting to play with the code from here out.

Uh... I would never suggest trying to get Ruby running on Windows. I think I have it running, but I wouldn't be able to tell you how I'd done that (should have documented what I was doing). If you can master getting Ruby running on Windows, you shouldn't underestimate what you can do

Started development again... it was taking too long coding everything from scratch so I'm using the Shintolin code. It's still in early transition, I'm messing with the graphics right now, so these are not finished. Then I'll move on to changing names and mechanics. Thought you'd like to see the first couple of screenshots:

Looking promising, Anthor. I especially like the idea of being able to change your starting settlement.
I think it's entirely possible it'll be done before Dealt in Lead 2 comes out.

Aww shintolin? That game is sooooo boring. No real killing. No real pillaging. No fun.

Shintolin has it's moments. I'm using it as a starting point, and I foresee a lot of changes.
The stun I definitely want to change to kill, and I've never been happy with the eating mechanic, though I'm thinking of modifying that to work as oxygen or radiation.

Maybe that only triggers on certain planets - there's a toxic atmosphere or no ozone layer, so you have to wear some sort of space suit to survive. But goodies are found on those planets, so it's worth it to brave them.

Exactly what I was thinking KB, that the mechanic only kicks in in certain places... So it's something people will put up with to gain items or XP, rather than it is in Shintolin where the hunger mechanic is in place constantly. Maybe that only triggers on certain planets - there's a toxic atmosphere or no ozone layer, so you have to wear some sort of space suit to survive. But goodies are found on those planets, so it's worth it to brave them.

Actually there is real pillaging. Too much of it The killing thing is a bit wierd, but it is realistic. It's not much of a problem anyway. Yay LightRising.
