As far as I can tell it was started because of Christian Fletcher claimed the Derby swamp. This caused other people to claim pieces of land. One of the benefits of claiming land is that you get a cool title so of course they started appearing.
I think the first person to change their forum name was Blahmicho.

I got copied pretty fast, which was unexpected but amusing. Never thought I'd be a trend-setter
